Typical Alberta power and gas bills this month, by city

About what a small and a typical home pays a month for power and gas in each Alberta town, worked out from dated default rates and tariffs.

On today's default rates, a home using 600 kWh of electricity and 9 GJ of gas pays about $282 a month in Airdrie and $334 in Beaumont, before any retailer plan.

These are worked examples on the default rates, built from dated tariffs. They are not the bills of real households, and every figure is an estimate.

Why winter bills are higher

Gas use climbs when it is cold. The gas energy charge, the usage-based delivery charges and the riders are all charged per gigajoule, so they rise with use. Only the daily charges do not change with use. Changing retailer does not change the delivery charges or the riders, but they still rise when you use more.

How this compares with a typical Alberta home

The Utilities Consumer Advocate says a typical Alberta household uses around 600 kWh of electricity and 10 GJ of natural gas a month. Our typical home uses 600 kWh and 9 GJ, so the electricity matches and the gas is one gigajoule lower. That makes our example a little lower than a household at the advocate’s figure.

How we worked this out

The small home uses 250 kWh of electricity and 3 GJ of gas a month. The typical home uses 600 kWh and 9 GJ. Each total adds the default energy rate and the supplier’s daily charge, the delivery charges and riders, and the town’s fees, then 5% GST on the whole bill. The part you can shop is the energy charge a plan changes; the rest comes with the address. Figures use the tariffs in force on 2026-10-27. See our sources and editorial policy.
