Why your Calgary bill is higher than your usage
Two things make up your bill. The energy charge is the part a plan changes. Delivery, fixed daily charges, riders and the local fee come with the address, so every home in Calgary pays them, whatever it uses.
A small home: 250 kWh of electricity a month
Of about $88 a month, $45 is the energy charge you can change by choosing a plan and $43 is what every home in Calgary pays.
A typical home: 600 kWh of electricity a month
Of about $159 a month, $89 is the energy charge you can change by choosing a plan and $70 is what every home in Calgary pays.
These are estimates for one average month, including 5% GST. The energy part uses the default rate and the default supplier’s daily charge; a plan will price it differently. Your own bill will differ with how much you use.

- Local access fee in Calgary (approved for 2025 and 2026): 1.5507¢ per kWh (from 1 January 2025) [source]
