If you cannot pay, contact the retailer named on your bill. Explain the problem and ask what help is available.

Call your retailer first

Ask about a payment arrangement you can manage. Keep a note of the reply and request the terms in writing. If you have a disconnection notice, tell the retailer when you call.

Can my power or gas be cut off in winter?

The Government of Alberta news release of 14 October 2026 says the Winter Rules start on 15 October.

Between 15 October and 15 April, residential electricity cannot be fully disconnected.

Starting 1 November, natural gas cannot be fully disconnected by retailers either.

In any season, a disconnection is prohibited if the forecast is below zero degrees within 24 hours of the planned disconnection.

The release says the Utilities Consumer Advocate will contact customers with disconnected utilities to help them reconnect.
