How do I read an ATCO gas bill?
Read an ATCO gas bill by checking the address, billed days and meter reading first. ATCO Gas explains its delivery charges separately from the gas you buy. Find the energy price, fees and any adjustments next. Ask the retailer named on the bill to explain lines you do not understand.
Was my gas meter reading estimated?
A gas meter reading marked estimated may differ from the gas you used. The UCA explains how later bills can include catch-up charges. Check the service address and reading dates first. Ask which past period a correction covers. An actual reading may change what you owe for past use.
Your retailer sends the bill and sells you gas. ATCO Gas operates the local gas delivery network in its service area. A bill showing ATCO delivery charges may come from another company. Check that the service address is yours, then compare the billed days and whether the reading is actual or estimated.
A GJ, or gigajoule, measures the energy in the gas you use. The energy charge is your billed GJ multiplied by the applicable price per GJ. A delivery charge pays for the network that brings gas to your home. A rider is a separate adjustment to the utility’s charges.
How do I read each line of a winter gas bill?
Read each line of a winter gas bill by separating gas energy, account fees, delivery and tax. The UCA explains these parts in its bill guide. For illustration, the fictional bill below shows how the lines fit together. Check each part against your own bill rather than copying its amounts.
For illustration
This teaching bill uses 20 GJ over 30 days. These are round, made-up amounts, not typical use or current prices. The table explains how to read the lines; it is not a payable bill or a quote.
Your plan sets thisSame for every home in your area
- Gas energy 20 GJ at a made-up $3 per GJ gives an estimated $60 energy charge, before fees, delivery and tax. Your plan
- Retailer administration The retailer’s fee for the account. Check whether it is billed daily or monthly in your agreement. Your plan
- Fixed delivery The daily network charge multiplied by 30 billed days. It does not depend on GJ used. Same for everyone
- Variable delivery The delivery price per GJ multiplied by 20 GJ. More heating use raises this charge. Same for everyone
- Transmission: Rider T A separate charge per GJ for upstream transmission, multiplied by 20 GJ. Same for everyone
- Other riders or adjustments Read the rider name and period. Ask what it changes and whether it is a charge or credit. Same for everyone
- Municipal franchise fee: Rider A The local fee applies to ATCO Gas charges before GST. Use the fee for your municipality, not the retailer’s energy price. Same for everyone
- GST Tax is separate from the energy price. Check the taxable subtotal on the bill. Same for everyone
- Amount due Check the new charges, previous balance, payments and credits. An unpaid balance can make the amount due larger than this period’s gas cost. Total
What are the delivery charges on an ATCO gas bill?
Delivery charges on an ATCO gas bill pay for bringing gas to the home. ATCO Gas lists these charges in its rate schedule. Some costs are fixed. Others change with gas use. Check your area and dates first, then read the gas energy price as a separate charge.
For the household category and area shown in the key facts, ATCO Gas North fixed delivery is C$0.997 per day (from 1 January 2026) [source]. Variable delivery is C$1.049 per GJ (from 1 January 2026) [source]. Rider T transmission is C$1.357 per GJ (from 1 January 2026) [source]. These are separate charges, not competing gas offers.
The municipal franchise fee on ATCO Gas charges before GST is 35% (from 1 January 2019) [source] in Edmonton and 22% (from 1 July 2010) [source] in Sherwood Park. Check your municipality and the period that applies before using a figure.
Where do I find my gas plan name, term and price?
Your gas plan name, term and price may appear beside the gas charges or in account messages. The UCA explains the main bill parts. Ask for missing terms in writing. Check the fees and end date too. Read the renewal rules before you compare the plan with another offer.
Look beside the gas energy charges for the price per GJ and plan name. Contract details or account messages may show the term and end date. If they are missing, ask your retailer for your agreement, the current price, all fees and what happens at renewal. A default monthly rate is different from a competitive fixed or floating plan.
Use your own past winter GJ in a gas plan comparison. Read the fixed or floating guide for help with price certainty. If the total looks wrong, start with the high-bill checks.

Questions people ask
How do I read my ATCO gas bill?
Read an ATCO gas bill by checking each part. Check the service address, billed days and meter reading first. Then separate gas energy from delivery, riders, municipal fees and tax. The retailer sending the bill may have a different name from ATCO Gas. The UCA explains these bill parts and how actual readings differ from estimates.
Why are gas delivery charges higher than my gas cost?
Gas delivery charges can exceed the gas energy cost. Delivery pays for the network, separately from the gas itself. Fixed charges remain even when use is low. Variable delivery and transmission charges rise with use. ATCO Gas lists these separate delivery charges in its rate schedule. Check the area and dates on your bill.
What is Rider T on my ATCO gas bill?
Rider T is the transmission charge for moving gas through the upstream pipeline network. It is separate from the energy price your retailer charges. ATCO Gas lists Rider T in its delivery rate schedule. Check the dates, service area and gas used before matching the charge to a published rate.
Where is my gas plan end date on the bill?
Your gas plan end date may be near the charges. Look for the plan or contract details near your gas charges or account messages. If the term or end date is missing, ask your retailer for the agreement and renewal terms. Contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate if the reply leaves a dispute unresolved.
Who do I call about a wrong gas bill?
Call your retailer about a wrong gas bill first. Start with the retailer named on the bill. Ask for a written explanation. ATCO Gas handles its distribution network and meter work.
