Key facts

  • Natural Gas Rebate Program began: What households got: The program began on 1 October 2022. Regulated gas providers did not charge above $6.50/GJ during October 2022 to February 2023, so rebates were not issued in that initial period.

Is there an electricity rebate now?

The old electricity bill credits were a separate programme. The later Alberta Energy Rebate is different. A one-time $100 payment for eligible Albertans to help with the cost of everyday essentials. (1 July 2026 to 31 October 2026) [source]

The Alberta Energy Rebate guide explains the application rules. For the earlier bill credits, use the dated record below.

When did each programme run?

The timeline separates announcements from payments. It also includes payment deferral and a temporary price ceiling. A default rate term and fuel charge relief are included too. These measures did not all pay money back to households.

What was the 2022 to 2023 electricity rebate?

These were bill credits for eligible customers. Three $50 bill credits totalled $150. Rebate issuance began in July 2022 for the January to March bills. [source]

The government added three more $50 rebates for October, November and December 2022. [source] The government added another $200: two $75 rebates for January and February 2023 and two $25 rebates for March and April 2023. [source]

The 2022 to 2023 electricity rebate ended in April 2023. The government provided $500 in rebates over the ten-month program. [source] The annual report records the bill line as “GOA Utility Commodity Rebate”. This is a record of past credits. It is not an offer of another payment today.

What was the 13.5 cent price ceiling?

A price ceiling of 13.5 cents per kWh applied to electricity charges for residential RRO customers in January, February and March 2023. Costs above the ceiling were deferred for later recovery. [source]

The ceiling covered January, February and March 2023. The report set recovery of deferred costs over 21 months, from April 2023 to December 2024. [source] Keep this separate from the bill credits when reading an older bill.

Does the gas rebate still pay?

The Natural Gas Rebate Program pays an automatic rebate when the 'Alberta price', the highest regulated default gas rate that month, goes above $6.50 per GJ. The rebate covers the difference between $6.50 and the Alberta price. (read 5 October 2026) [source]

No rebate will be credited for the October 2026 billing period. [source] This is a dated monthly notice. It is not a promise about later months.

Our natural gas rebate guide explains the trigger. It links to the monthly notice. A programme can remain in place without a credit being due.

What happened to the carbon levy?

The Government of Canada set all federal fuel charge rates to zero from 1 April 2025, under regulations made on 15 March 2025. (from 1 April 2025) [source]

This changed the charge rather than paying a household rebate. Our carbon tax on gas bills guide explains how to check an older charge.

Why did the Regulated Rate Option change its name?

The AUC fact sheet identifies the default rate as the Rate of Last Resort. It was previously called the Regulated Rate Option. The default rate is fixed for two years starting 1 January 2025; changes between terms cannot normally exceed 10 per cent. (from 1 January 2025) [source]

This is a default pricing rule, not a household rebate. Read the Rate of Last Resort guide for how it works on a bill.

Questions people ask

When did the Alberta electricity rebate end?

The earlier electricity bill rebate ended in April. That was the year after it began. The timeline gives its dated payment schedule and total. Those credits are separate from the later Alberta Energy Rebate. Use the current rebate guide to check the application deadline. It also covers official notices.

Can I apply for an old electricity rebate?

The earlier electricity rebate was delivered through eligible utility bills. The government report records when those credits were paid. It also records when the programme ended. Do not treat an old rebate announcement as an application offer today. For current application information, follow the official page. Our current rebate guide links to it.

Was the electricity price ceiling another rebate?

The temporary ceiling limited the electricity energy price charged to residential default customers. It applied during its stated winter period. Costs above the ceiling were deferred for later recovery. The electricity rebate provided bill credits. These were different measures. Check the dated facts before treating either as relief on a bill today.

Does the natural gas rebate still exist?

The gas rebate remains a price trigger programme. A credit is due only when the highest regulated monthly gas rate passes the trigger. The programme alone does not mean a payment is due. Read the gas rebate guide. Check the official notice for your billing month too.
