Encor by EPCOR, Easymax by ENMAX Energy and Direct Energy sell gas; ATCO Gas or Apex delivers it. Electricity lines are in the EPCOR, ENMAX and Direct Energy electricity guides. The UCA and each company’s page separate these roles. Direct Energy Regulated Services sells default gas in ATCO Gas areas. Switching leaves delivery unchanged.
The companies that sell gas and deliver it
EPCOR’s Encor, ENMAX and Direct Energy sell gas. The UCA lists who sells it and who owns the pipes. These are two roles. A gas plan pays for the fuel you use. ATCO Gas or Apex brings it to your home. A switch leaves those pipes and their fees in place.
EPCOR also delivers electricity and water. ENMAX Power delivers electricity in Calgary. ENMAX Energy sells electricity and gas as Easymax. Read the company names guide for their other roles.

ATCO Gas North delivers gas in Edmonton. ATCO Gas South delivers it in Calgary. The North and South franchise schedules list those cities in their areas.
The gas labels each seller publishes
ENMAX, Encor and Direct Energy describe gas charges using different labels. The AUC publishes the Direct Energy Regulated Services gas schedule. Energy pays for gas used. Account fees pay for retail service. Delivery and riders pay for the network. Match the category and dates before comparing a line with your bill.
These are published labels and categories, not a verified order on a printed bill. ENMAX and Direct Energy group delivery charges. Their pages do not name each ATCO Gas line. A repeated category below does not mean it is billed twice.
| Gas line | Direct Energy Regulated Services [source] [source] | ENMAX Energy [source] | Encor [source] | Direct Energy [source] |

The Encor gas section lists natural gas, administration, delivery, transmission rider, franchise fee, other riders and carbon tax in that order. ENMAX lists gas energy before delivery, riders, franchise fees, tax and account fees. Its transmission charge and Balancing Pool Allocation descriptions concern electricity.
Direct Energy separates Retailer charges from Distributor & government charges. DERS Rate G1 lists customer charges and fixed delivery before the gas cost flow-through and variable delivery. Rider F here means gas cost flow-through.
ENMAX’s federal carbon tax policy: Ended on 1 April 2025 (from 1 April 2025) [source]. Encor’s bill treatment: Charges remain for gas used up to and including 31 March 2025. From 1 April 2025, the carbon tax line stays on Encor bills at $0.00. (from 1 April 2025) [source]. The carbon tax guide explains the date. The old carbon-tax rates on EPCOR’s and Direct Energy’s pages are out of date.
A worked default gas month in Edmonton
A default gas month combines the gas cost with daily fees, delivery, riders and tax. The AUC publishes DERS customer charges and the ATCO Gas schedules. Separate the energy and account fees first. A new plan can change those lines. The gas network and municipal fee follow your home.
For illustration
For illustration: October 2026 is one month of default gas, not a plan price. This Edmonton example uses 9 GJ and 365/12 days, about 30.4 days. The October default rate changes each month. Each amount uses October charges and rounds to cents for display.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gas energy | $13.12 |
| Administration | $10.04 |
| Fixed delivery | $30.33 |
| Variable delivery | $9.44 |
| Rider T | $12.21 |
| Rider L | $0.82 |
| Rider B | $2.96 |
| Rider A | $18.48 |
| Before GST | $97.39 |
| GST | $4.87 |
| With GST | $102.26 |
Energy is GJ times the October rate. Administration and fixed delivery use billed days. Variable delivery, Rider T and Rider L use GJ. Riders A and B each use the delivery subtotal including riders. GST applies to the subtotal. Displayed cents can differ from the unrounded sum by a cent.
The part a new plan can change is the energy and administration lines, about a quarter of this month. Delivery, riders and the franchise fee stay. A real bill can differ by a few cents.

See Fixed Delivery; Variable Delivery; Third Party Transportation, Rate Rider G; Gas Cost, Rate Rider D (read 30 October 2026) [source]. Apex is both distributor and default seller in its area.
ATCO Gas lines on another company’s bill
ATCO Gas lines on another company’s bill pay for gas delivery. ATCO Gas does not send your gas bill. Your gas seller does and adds the delivery charges. The AUC describes the riders. Read the fixed daily charge separately from charges based on gas use. A new seller uses the same network.
- Fixed delivery: the daily charge times billed days.
- Variable delivery: the delivery rate times GJ used.
- Rider T: upstream transmission costs from NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd.
- Rider L: refund or recovery of the load balancing account.
- Rider B: municipal property tax on the network.
- Rider A: municipal franchise fee. The North schedule defines its base as “ATCO Gas total charges, less GST”. It excludes the retailer’s gas energy and account fees.
Read the ATCO Gas line walkthrough, delivery and rider guide and municipal franchise fee guide. Rider names and dates matter when a charge or credit changes.
The retailer’s own account fees
Retailer account fees differ by company and service. ENMAX and EPCOR publish daily administration policies. Direct Energy describes a fixed monthly fee for its competitive service. The AUC publishes default gas customer charges. Read the company name and dates beside each fee before comparing it with your own agreement.
Read these policies on 30 October 2026. This table follows company names alphabetically. It compares no plan prices. See the administration and other bill fees guide for late payments and other charges.

The company to call about a gas bill
Call the retailer named on your gas bill about the amount, plan and meter reading. The UCA can help with an unresolved dispute. ATCO Gas or Apex handles its network, meter work and gas emergencies. Keep your bill and written replies together so the company can trace the charge.
For a suspected gas leak, leave the area and use your distributor’s emergency contact from a safe place. Use the UCA contact page for a dispute. Start with the high-bill checks if usage or billing days look wrong.

Questions people ask
Does EPCOR provide natural gas?
EPCOR provides natural gas plans through Encor, its retail brand. Your gas plan pays for the fuel you use. EPCOR Distribution handles electricity delivery. ATCO Gas or Apex brings gas to your home. The name on the bill tells you who sells the gas, not who owns the pipes.
Is ENMAX gas or electricity?
ENMAX sells gas and electricity through ENMAX Energy’s Easymax plans. You can buy either fuel or both. ENMAX Power delivers electricity in Calgary. ATCO Gas South delivers gas there. Buying gas from Easymax does not make ENMAX your gas distributor or change the gas network serving your home.
Does Direct Energy provide gas?
Direct Energy sells gas on a plan. Direct Energy Regulated Services is the default gas seller in ATCO Gas areas. Read the full name on your bill to tell which service you have. The two services have their own fees and rates. Both use your local gas delivery network.
Is ATCO Gas the company that sends my gas bill?
ATCO Gas does not send your gas bill. Your gas seller does and adds the delivery charges. ATCO Energy is a separate gas seller. Ask the company named on your bill about your plan and use. The gas network stays the same when you switch sellers.
Is the carbon tax still on my gas bill?
The carbon tax no longer applies to current gas use. EPCOR’s Encor can still bill the tax for gas used before it ended. Later Encor bills keep the line at zero. Ask your gas seller which dates a charge covers before treating an old line as a new tax.
