Find your gas co-op or rural gas utility

The Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops map helps you find which gas co-op to ask about your home. Open Map View on its members page, then ask the utility if it serves your address. The list below gives office towns and links, so you can reach the utility.

There are 79 gas utilities (read 30 October 2026) [source] on the Federation's list. Its home page gives 82 natural gas utilities: 54 gas co-ops, 16 towns and villages, 5 counties and 7 First Nations (read 30 October 2026) [source].

Find your rural electrification association

The Alberta Federation of REAs (AFREA) maps and contact list help you find an REA to ask about your home. Start with the maps, then ask the REA if it serves your address. The office towns below show where to reach each one, rather than the homes it serves.

AFREA's map page links a district map dated January 2023 and a UCA map dated January 2019. The February 2025 contact list has 31 REAs (read 30 October 2026) [source]. The member directory has 18 entries (read 30 October 2026) [source].

If you are locating in an REA's service area, the AFREA contact list says you must sign a Member Service Contract before getting power. (read 30 October 2026) [source]

The UCA directory lists Battle River Power Coop and EQUS REA LTD. as REAs. (read 30 October 2026) [source] Ask your REA about retailer choice.

Retailer choice depends on your utility

Gas co-op members generally cannot use another gas retailer, says the UCA. An REA may let you choose a retailer, but you need to ask it first. Ask for the answer in writing. The plan comparison in our bill check covers only retailers that serve your address.

A customer of a rural gas co-op cannot sign a contract with another natural gas retailer, unless the customer is not a farm and uses more than 10,000 GJ a year. (read 15 October 2026) [source]

A member of an REA signs a Member Service Contract with it. The member can buy electricity at the REA default rate for the amount in that contract, or from a competitive electricity retailer if the REA offers that option. (read 15 October 2026) [source]

Ask your REA which retailer choices apply to your contract. Our rural power and gas guide explains REAs, gas co-ops, delivery costs and idle charges.

Your utility sets its rates and bill charges

The UCA says gas co-ops set their own prices and answer to members. FedGas describes a pooled gas rate plus fees to run the system. Ask your utility for a breakdown of its gas, delivery and other charges. The rate alone is not the whole bill.

FedGas says Gas Alberta Inc. sets a monthly pooled gas rate for utilities to charge their customers. Utilities may add fees to run and maintain the gas system. (read 30 October 2026) [source]

FedGas says its utilities are owned or governed by their members or communities. Gas co-ops have elected boards. Municipal and First Nations utilities report to elected councils. (read 30 October 2026) [source]

The UCA, citing FedGas, describes gas co-ops as supplying over 25 million gigajoules of gas annually (read 30 October 2026) [source] to over 165,000 customers (read 30 October 2026) [source]. Those figures describe gas supplied and customers, rather than the number of utilities in either table.

Start a complaint with your co-op or REA

The UCA says to take gas co-op questions or concerns to the co-op administration. For REA questions, contact your local REA or AFREA. Keep your bill and a copy of what you asked. Start with the utility that sent the bill, then seek help with the part still in dispute.

  1. Write to the gas co-op administration or the REA's board. Name the charge or service issue and ask for a reply.
  2. For REA questions, contact AFREA. For gas utility contacts, use the Federation's list and map.
  3. The UCA says the Rural Utilities Section of Alberta Affordability and Utilities regulates gas co-ops. Ask the UCA how to reach it: 310-4822 in Alberta or 1-888-644-6608 from outside Alberta.

Questions people ask

Is there a map of Alberta gas co-ops?

The Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops has a map of Alberta gas co-ops and other rural gas utilities, says FedGas. Open Map View on its Our Members page. Use the map to find a contact, then ask that utility about your address. An office town alone does not tell you who serves your home.

Is there a map of rural electrification associations in Alberta?

The Alberta Federation of REAs publishes maps of rural electrification associations in Alberta, says AFREA. Its REA AB Map page links both maps and a contact list. Use the maps to find an REA to ask about your home. The office town in a list is only a place to reach it.

Can a gas co-op member switch to another gas retailer?

A gas co-op member generally cannot switch to another gas retailer, says the UCA. A large non-farm user may qualify for an exception. The retailer choice section gives the yearly use limit. Ask your co-op how the rule applies to your home.

How many gas co-ops and REAs are there in Alberta?

FedGas lists 79 rural gas utilities; its home page says 82 utilities, including 54 gas co-ops. AFREA lists 31 REAs in its February 2025 contact PDF and 18 in its member directory. We read these sources on 30 October 2026.
