What is a site ID?

The Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) explains site IDs and meter numbers this way: These two numbers identify the meter at the property. Site ID is like the address or location of the meter, and the meter number is on the meter itself. (read 21 October 2026) [source]

For both fuels, ATCO Energy says: Every property in the province of Alberta with an electricity or natural gas meter has a unique site ID number assigned to each meter. (read 21 October 2026) [source]

Keep the electricity site ID with your electricity details and the gas site ID with your gas details. Do not use the meter number in a box labelled Site ID.

Where is it on my bill?

Look for the label Site ID beside the service or meter details for each fuel. Bill layouts vary. On an EPCOR bill, look for that label rather than assuming the account number is your site ID. Ask EPCOR if you cannot find it.

The UCA says: Check the account name, billing address, and site ID. (read 21 October 2026) [source] Match the service address to the home you are setting up.

For ENMAX Power sites only, ENMAX describes the ID as a 13 digit number, beginning with "0020..." (read 21 October 2026) [source]. Do not apply that format to other distributors.

I have no bill yet. How do I get it?

For a first move or a new home, use the UCA lookup below to find who delivers to the address. Contact that distributor and ask for help identifying the site. Have the full service address and unit ready.

Direct Energy’s moving guide says: If you’re having trouble finding your address during setup, contact your distributor for support. (read 21 October 2026) [source] Having the site ID or meter number ready can help speed up setup.

A new home can take time to appear in a system. ENMAX warns about its meter reading schedule: New site IDs (residences) may not appear for two to three months. (read 21 October 2026) [source] That is not a wait time for every Alberta distributor.

Use the contact for the company serving your address. These are published customer service or general inquiry contacts, not promises of an address-to-site-ID lookup:

Who delivers power and gas to my address?

Your distributor runs the local wires or pipes. Consumers cannot choose their distribution company as this is based upon location. (read 21 October 2026) [source]

Use the UCA retailer and distributor lookup to check who serves your location. Check electricity and gas separately. If you need help, call the UCA at 310-4822 (in Alberta) (read 21 October 2026) [source].

A distributor and a retailer can have similar names. Read how ENMAX, EPCOR, ATCO and Direct Energy differ before contacting a company.

Who sells me my power and gas?

Your retailer is the seller named on your bill. Check the electricity and gas sections separately. Albertans can buy electricity and natural gas from a competitive retailer or stay on a default rate. Which retailers are available depends on where you live. (read 5 October 2026) [source]

If you never chose a competitive plan, check for a default supplier. The existing electricity provider areas are: EPCOR Energy Alberta provides the Rate of Last Resort in the EPCOR Distribution (Edmonton) and FortisAlberta areas, ENMAX Energy in the ENMAX Power area (Calgary), and Direct Energy Regulated Services in the ATCO Electric area. (from 1 January 2025) [source]

Read about the Rate of Last Resort for electricity. Gas has its own default tariff. The bill’s retailer name tells you who to ask about your current plan.

Questions people ask

What is an electricity or gas site ID in Alberta?

A site ID identifies the meter location at a property. Electricity and natural gas meters have separate site IDs, even at the same home. Look for the site ID on your utility bill. The meter number printed on the meter itself is a different identifier.

Where is the site ID on my EPCOR bill?

Look for the label Site ID in the electricity or gas details on your bill. Check the service address as well, especially if the bill covers more than one property. If you cannot find the label, ask the retailer named on the bill to help you locate it.

How do I find my ATCO gas site ID without a bill?

Start by checking which company delivers gas to your address through the UCA retailer and distributor tool. If ATCO Gas serves the address, contact ATCO Gas for help with the site details. ATCO Energy is a retailer, so its name does not by itself identify your gas distributor.

How do I find out who my electricity provider is?

Check the retailer name on your electricity bill to find who sells you power. The company that delivers it may be different. Use the UCA retailer and distributor tool to check who serves your location. If you never chose a competitive plan, check your bill for a default rate.
